Detailed description of the shown example of the invention Figure 1 schematically shows the load-bearing parts of a side of a vehicle with a sill beam 11, to which an A-pillar 12, a B-pillar 13 and a C-pillar 14 are welded. The B-pillar 13 is welded at its upper end to a roof beam 19.
Figures 2-5 show a main profile 20 for a B-pillar, which main part 20 comprises a hat profile / hat beam 21 with a central end 22, two body portions 23,24 and two side flanges 25,26. at its upper and lower ends, the main part 20 has portions 27,28 for connection to the roof beam 19 and the threshold beam 11 of a vehicle chassis. The central flange 22 faces the outside of the vehicle.
Figure 3 indicates that the hat beam 21 normally has a varying width and height measurement along its length. The main profile 20 normally also has a certain length curvature which, among other things, depends on the design of the vehicle.
Figure 4 shows in a cross section a completed B-pillar 13 according to the invention, where an inner cover plate 40 is arranged, so that it together with the hat profile 21 forms a drawer profile or closed profile. In the example shown, the cover plate 40 is so profiled that its central portion 41 is located inside (below) the abutment zones 42,43 of the cover plate 40 against the side flanges 25,26 of the hat profile 21. It should be understood that the cover plate 40 can also be flat or have any profiling, where also, for example, the middle portion 41 can be outside (above) the abutment surfaces of the cover plate 40 against the side flanges 25, 26. It will thus be appreciated that the cover plate may be of any design and size within the scope of the invention. The cover plate can, if desired, cover a smaller or larger portion of the hat profile 21 and also be divided into two or mindre smaller cover plates.
Normally, the completed B-pillar according to the invention also comprises an outer panel 50 of, for example, steel which has been projected so that it fits on the outside of the main profile 20 and covers it in the desired length section. The outer panel 50 can sometimes be omitted and when used it is usually for aesthetic reasons and / or for reasons of tightness. The main profile 20 is made by press hardening, i.e. it is thermoformed and hardened by a flat blank of boron steel in an operation in cooled forming tools. It has hardened to a breaking strength exceeding 1400 MPa, but some parts of its side flanges 25,26 have not been fully hardened but have a breaking strength of less than 1100 MPa. Such non-cured portions may be termed soft zones A and their breaking strength may suitably be between 500 and 1000 MPa. This reduced strength can be obtained in various known ways, for example by heating the abutment surfaces of the tool pair against the product, while other parts of the tool pair are cooled.
The flat parts 25,26 of the side flanges have the desired lower breaking strength while adjacent curved portions 29,30 form a transition zone B to fully cured material.
The length L of the soft zone of the side flanges 25,26 may preferably be about 50% of the total length of the side flanges and such a soft zone A is shown with a shadow portion along the side flanges 25,26 in Figure 2. However, it should be understood that the length and location of the soft zones A may varied as needed depending on, among other things, the desired deformation properties and / or cover plate design. Suitably the length L is about 10-80% of the total length of the side flanges 25.26.
The cover plate 40 can be made by press hardening with the same high breaking strength (minimum 1400 Pa) and with the same lower breaking strength (maximum 1100 MPa), as mentioned above, in the flanges or in the abutment portion 42,43 against the side flanges 25,26 of the hat profile 21. However, the cover plate 40 can also be cold-formed in a steel having a strength of less than 1100 MPa, for example with a strength of 300-1000 MPa. It is advantageous that both the side flanges 25,26 of the hat profile 21 and the abutment zones of the cover plate against the side flanges 25,26 have approximately the same strength and ductility. The dimensions of the cover plate 40 or, where applicable, the cover plates are adapted to the desired performance of the B-pillar.
The breaking strength of the outer panel 50 is normally less than 1100 MPa.
As can be seen from Figure 4, the softened side fi of the main profile 20 is spot welded 25,26 together with the cover plate 40 and an optional outer panel / outer plate 50 by the required number of welding points so that a completed B-pillar is obtained. The welding points 4 are denoted by 100 and occur in the required number. Laser welding is also applicable. The outer panel 50 may in some cases be omitted. The soft zone A of the side flanges 25,26 is arranged so that the cover plate 40 is welded to the side flanges 25,26 within the soft zone or soft zones A.
The B-pillar thus obtains a closed profile after at least part of its length.
In the event of a side impact with, for example, another vehicle hitting the B-pillar, the lower strength and greater ductility of the flanges 25,26 will reduce the risk of breakage of the B-pillar before it absorbs maximum energy through plastic deformation.
This improves the protection of the passengers concerned.
It will be appreciated that many geometric variations with respect to the complete B-pillar and its constituent components are possible within the scope of the invention.
The invention is thus not limited to what is shown and described, but changes and modifications are thus possible within the scope of the appended claims.

2.. B-pillar for vehicles comprising a main profile (20) with a hat profile (21) having a central end (22), two body portions (23, 24) and two side ends (25, 26), characterized in that at least the hat profile (21) is pressure hardened and has a breaking strength exceeding 1400 MPa except that the side flanges (25,26) of the hat profile (21) have a breaking strength of less than 1100 MPa
